We’ve heard tons of stories about doctors leaving surgical instruments inside the patients they’ve opened up. These instruments can range from scalpel blades to scissors and even forceps. Amazingly, careless surgeons and nurses don’t have any idea that they’ve left these items inside the patients, which could cause serious health problems. Despite the medical community’s attempts to discredit stories about these, there are several x-rays out there that prove these medical accidents do happen.
These stories of rusted scalpels and scissors left inside patients are no laughing matter but they aren’t exactly new to us, so seeing a couple of x-rays of these aren’t shocking anymore. But what if we tell you there are much much worse things x-rays can show you? Like, a gardening tool impaled through a person’s eye socket? Or, a bottle of gin inserted up one’s, uhm, bottom? Take a look at these 5 outrageous x-rays.
Liquor bottle shoved up Mohammad Yusuf’s rectum by robbers.
Pruning shears impaled through Leroy Luetscher’s eye socket during an accident.
Needles found in 29-year old Luo Cuifen’s body. Her grandparents had attempted to kill her, allowing her parents to have another baby – this time, they hoped it would be a boy.
Magnets and steel balls found inside 8-year-old Haley Lents stomach.
Six nails from a nail gun accident embedded inside Isidro Mejia’s skull.
Peter Glazebrook from Newark has claimed the top prize in the heaviest onion contest, smashing the world record with his 17lb 15.05oz onion specimen. The previous record was recorded back in 2005 with the winning 16lb 8.3oz specimen.
This competition is part of the National Onion Championship which is sponsored by Kitchen Garden.
What makes this man amazing – yes, the man and not his onion – was that he also won the award for other giant vegetable classes. He took the prize for the longest cucumber (32.5 inches), heaviest potato (6lb 10.75oz), longest runner bean (31 inches), heaviest tomato (2lb 11.25oz), and heaviest cabbage (64lb 2oz).
The contest was held during the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show 2011.
If you’re not really up for burials or cremations (or if your religious beliefs bar those options), then you have another alternative when the time comes to bite the dust. It’s called resomation, and it’s pretty much like cremation except without the fire.
The process basically involves the body being submerged in a solution of potassium hydroxide and water inside a tank. Pressure and heat is then applied to the tank for approximately three hours. At the end of the process, the body’s soft tissues are broken down into its basic components (amino acids, sugars, salts, and peptides, among other chemicals). You are reduced to greenish-brown liquid and bones.
It’s an interesting and eco-friendly alternative. Check out the news report below for more on resomation.
Cakes, as normally placid desserts, usually don’t give a fight when you’re about to eat their sugary goodness. Well, sculptor Scott Hove is about to change that with his new creations for a show, aptly called “Your Deadly Desserts.” As the name suggests, the cakes in his line up look like they will readily bite your hand off if you so much as look at it the wrong way.
This reminds us too much of IT.
This one too. What’s with the raspberry that reminds us of clown noses?
And we thought the ones above were terrifying enough.
Along with the spikes, fangs, tongues, and other bits from our nightmares, Scott Hove throws in a few dismembered body parts too.
If you want to see more of these cakes with a bite, feel free to check out the link below.
When we said odd, we weren’t solely pertaining to the restaurants’ menus – we were referring to the the location, staff and various other quirks about these them. Some food joints boast of chocolate-covered worms or of goats’ and cows’ unmentionables as part of their special menus, while these 4 oddest restaurants boast of, well, a lot of things most ordinary people wouldn’t normally be proud of.
Dinner in the Sky – This is certainly not for the altophobic (people who suffer from fear of heights). As the name suggests, you’ll be having your meal waaaaaay up in the air. The tables, chairs, waitstaff are hoisted up some 150 feet or so into the air by a crane.
Modern Toilet Restaurant – Based in Taiwan, this unusual restaurant has a full-on toilet theme. Instead of traditional wooden chairs, it uses toilet seats, and its tables are usually made from sinks or tubs covered with clear glass. The dinnerware is also very unique – miniature versions of toilet bowls, urinals, drinking fountains and tubs are used to hold food.
Ithaa Underwater Restaurant – This underwater restaurant is located in the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, and sits five meters below sea level. The restaurant has a transparent acrylic roof which gives diners a 180 degree view of the Indian Ocean, allowing them to observe different fishes and sting rays while they eat. The place is quite small as it can only seat up to 14 persons at a time.
Izakaya Kayabuki – The Kayabuki Tavern in Japan is a sake-house. It’s nothing fancy, but what makes it unusual is its staff. The owner’s two pet macaque monkeys work at the restaurant – one brings hot towels to customers to clean up before each meal, while the other serves the patrons’ orders.
Gold (Au, from the Latin word aurum) is the oldest precious metals on Earth. In 2001, gold cost USD 400 an ounce – now the price for gold has risen to USD 2,000 per ounce. Gold is pretty much embargoed in various mints, forts, and heavily guarded facilities, keeping its prices up. Though that may be the case, people still buy gold (in bars and coins) especially when the economy is bad. Apparently one can purchase gold from a number of places, including that ATM that churns out gold and Harrods, a department store in London.

People – especially those who wield power and have enough riches – can demand for whatever they want, and they usually get them. This holds true even after these people’s deaths, especially if they’ve specifically stated these demands in their last wills and testaments. Not all requests though are rational, but they’re requests nonetheless and their family and friends usually honor them. Below are some of the most unusual requests made by famous personalities in their last wills.
William Shakespeare
In his last will and testament, Shakespeare requested that his wife, Anne Hathaway, receive his “second best bed”, arousing suspicions about the state of their relationship. During Shakespeare’s time, it was not uncommon to leave a bed to a family member or friend upon death, mainly because a bed that wasn’t infested with fleas or vermin was expensive.
Benjamin Franklin
In his will, Benjamin Franklin stated that he wished his daughter will not engage in “the expensive, vain ad useless pasttime of wearing jewels”. He had a very valid reason for this request though: he owned a portrait of King Louis XVI that had 408 diamonds studded in its frame. He wanted to prevent his daughter from removing the diamonds from the frame.
Harry Houdini
Famous escape artist, Harry Houdini, instructed his wife to hold an annual seance so that he could reveal himself to her. His wife religiously held a seance every Halloween for 10 years, but Houdini never “showed up”.
John Bowman
John Bowman wanted his household to prepare a meal every night after his death in case he and his deceased family return to their home hungry. He believed that he and his family would be reincarnated together, so to make this request possible, he set up a trust worth $50,000. This would pay off the servants nad help maintain his mansion.
Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens wanted to have a simple funeral upon his death, requiring attendees not to wear a scarf, a black bow, a cloak, a long hatband and other common funeral garb. He also requested that the funeral not be made public. Unfortunately, other people had different ideas. His funeral was a national event attended by people dressed in full funeral regalia. All his requests were promptly ignored.
Sometimes, you are called upon to point out something (like the dots over an i or a j and man-boobs), and you describe them since you didn’t know they were actually called something. There are a few everyday things that you probably didn’t know had names, and BuzzFeed has listed some of them to educate us.
The dot over an i or a j is called a tittle. It’s basically a mark made to distinguish characters in different languages. On the other hand, we’re pretty sure you’ve heard of the term man-boobs or moobs before, but the condition actually has a proper name: gynecomastia. On the other hand, the pins and needles sensation you feel when a body part falls asleep is called paresthesia while phosphenes refers to the lights you see when you close your eyes tightly.
Wamble is the sound your stomach makes when it rumbles, while dysania is the state when you find yourself glued to your bed in the morning. If you want to learn more things you didn’t know had names, you can follow the link below. Before you go though: rectal tenesmus is the feeling of incomplete defecation. We all know the feeling but not the name.
Some people collect first edition comic books in mint condition; others collect rare coins and bills with special serial numbers, limited edition stamps, and even action figures. There are those who collect more Santa Claus toys and statues, while other have thousands of stuffed toys. Amazingly, other people have far stranger collections, such as the following.
Toaster Collection
Jens Veerbeck hobby is collecting toasters. He has over 600 models in his collection, some of which were made in the 1920s and some costing a whopping £1,500 each.
Coca-Cola Collection
The owner of Colaplaza.com has collected over 8,000 Coca-Cla cans. S/He started collected in the early 80s.
View-Master films
Cincinnati resident, Mary Ann Sell, has an equally bizarre collection: films for the View-Master.
McDonald’s Happy Meal toy collection
Eleven-year old Luke Underwood had a collection of some 7,000 pieces of McDonald’s Happy Meal toys. Included in his collection were the only known complete 101 Dalmatians set and several other rare memorabilias. Most items from the collection have since been auctioned off.
Soap Collection
Sutton Coldfield resident, Mrs. Vaughn, has been collecting soap boars since 1991. According to the owner of this impressive collection of around 5000 bars of soap, her hobby was a good way for her to pass the time as she cared for her mother. The soap bars come in a variety of colors, shapes, sizes and origins.
That’s Marilyn Monroe, and in case you’re curious, she was not painted using a brush, or drawn with a pencil. She was painted using a pair of lips.
Natalie Irish, an artist from Texas, paints with her lips. She basically applies lipstick, kisses the canvass, and voila! A portrait emerges. She has a portrait of Jimi Hendrix, Marilyn Monroe (seen above), the Beatles, Elvis, and Roy Rogers. She also makes portraits with thumbprints and shows videos of how she does them.
Pucker up for art!
It’s an awesome piece of art don’t you think? If you want to see how she made that portrait of Jimi Hendrix, just click play below.
