John Landis’ Monsters in the Movies to hit shelves Monday

John Landis’ Monsters in the Movies to hit shelves Monday

Who doesn’t know werewolves, vampires, and zombies, among other movie monsters? Even if you aren’t the type who likes horror movies or monster features, you can at least remember the countless portrayals of Count Dracula, Mr. Hyde, Frankenstein, and other monsters who have made crossovers from books to movies. Well, director John Landis knows his movie monsters, as evidenced by An American Werewolf in London, the music video for Thriller, and an episode of Masters of Horror entitled Deer Woman. To display his love for monster movie stars, he has written a history book about it called Monsters In The Movies: 100 Years of Cinematic Nightmares.

The book includes interviews with Rick Baker, John Carpenter, and other legends in the genre, plus chapters on your favorite movie monsters. If you’re a fan of the genre, or simply curious of how movie monsters have evolved from clay stopmotion to today’s CGI monstravaganzas, you can get John Landis’ book as soon as it hits the stores on Monday.

The Expendables 2: More Testosterone Coming Up

The Expendables 2: More Testosterone Coming Up

Are you ready for another action star smorgasbord? News has sprouted up about the sequel to The Expendables. In addition to having Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger back (but this time with more screen time), two legendary action superstars have apparently signed up for the project: Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris. Reportedly, Sly Stallone also wants John Travolta and Nic Cage in on carnage.

As it is, the roster is beefy with action stars, with Sylvester Stallone and the crew bringing out the big guns and bigger booms to the screen for a second time. Stallone has left the directing to Simon West (Con Air), but it seems that he still has the idea factory going on for him for The Expendables 2. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stallone dropped a teaser and some comments about winter in Bulgaria:

We’ll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme, which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one. We’ve got Chuck Norris and I think Nic Cage… We’re trying to work out different scenarios. I like using people that had a moment and then maybe have fallen on some hard times and give them another shot.

Regarding Travolta, he added:

It’s possible. The one thing I’ve learned is what is a fact on Monday is a complete fallacy on Tuesday. A lot of it is scheduling. It’s not financial. It’s just that Bulgaria is definitely a jaunt. It’s a commitment, you know what I mean? Especially in the dead of winter.

Batmobile replica on eBay

A replica of Batman’s Batmobile used in the 1989 movie is up on eBay. Its price tag is listed at $620,000. Built by Putsch Racing, this awesome replica is turbine-powered and – amazingly – is street legal.

The Batmobile has 365HP and can reach a top speed of 180 MPH. Because this is built out of a decommissioned military chopper, it reuquires kerosene, Jet A or diesel fuel. So this means you won’t only be worrying about the car’s price tag, but you’ll also have to worry about what you put into the car to run properly.

The Batmobile replica is still up on eBay, eagerly awaiting the best offer on it. Auction is open until September 15.

D23 Expo: Sneak Peek at the Avengers movie

D23 Expo: Sneak Peek at the Avengers movie

At this year’s D23 Expo at Anaheim, California, Disney showed some footage of the upcoming Avengers movie, showing exchanges between Nick Fury and Loki, and Tony Stark and Loki.

The exchanges are pretty terse, with Nick Fury giving Loki a warning and with Tony Stark giving the villain a head count of heroes. Here’s a detailed description from CinemaBlend.com:

The footage begins with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) entering a big round cage with glass walls. Behind him doors with pneumatic locks seal behind him and we see Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) walking over to a control panel. Fury says, “In case it’s unclear, if you try to escape, if you so much as scratch that glass…” Fury presses a button and a huge hole opens beneath the cell. Inside the hole you can see dark clouds and lightning – they are in the helicarrier. Nick Fury continues “that’s 30,000 feet straight down a stainless steel tube.” Never changing expression, Loki compliments Fury on his jail, calling it “an impressive cage” and recognizing that it wasn’t built for him. Loki stares into a security camera and we see the various members of the Avengers, including Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) watching him in various monitors. Fury responds that it’s built for something a lot stronger. Loki understands, saying “a mindless beast makes play he’s still a man,” referring to Hulk.

The Avengers movie will feature Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Thor. It’s slated for release May 4, 2012.

Blade Runner to get a reboot

Blade Runner to get a reboot

It’s true! Director Ridley Scott has agreed to give his 1982 classic sci-fi flick, Blade Runner, a reboot. While it wasn’t indicated whether the new version would be a prequel or a sequel, the announcement from Alcon Entertainment did confirm that it will surely come to the big screen in the near future.

In case you’re too young to have actually watched the original Blade Runner, it stars Harrison Ford as the titular blade runner. The film also stars Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah, and Sean Young. It’s based on the story Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick and is lauded as one of the most visually influential films of all time.

If movie fans can expect anything, they can expect new faces in the reboot. Reportedly, the film won’t have anything to do with Harrison Ford as the film is said to be “a total reinvention.”

In another note, Ridley Scott is currently working on another movie project, Prometheus, which was intended to be a prequel to the 1979 film Alien.

5 Banned Movies

There are several reasons why some films end up getting banned from theaters in several (or all) countries. Usually, film critics and motion picture associations of most countries cite extreme (and senseless) violence, child pornography, sexual violence and torture as reasons for banning these flicks. Sometimes though, one can’t help but feel as if critics and movie boards are only exaggerating these reasons. However, they were right to ban the following movies due to their extremely graphic and disturbing content (added to the fact that most of the movies really don’t have a good story line and any form of character development).

Warning: The trailers are very very very disturbing. Don’t watch if you’re squeamish.

The Human Centipede 2

Three American tourists gets kidnapped by a mad Dutch scientist who turns them into a human centipede by – ack – stitching them together, mouth to anus. According to critics, what makes the movie worse is that the victims were never portrayed in any light other than as objects to be mutilated, brutalized and degraded.

Mikey

Banned in many countries, the 1992 film Mikey tells the story of a nine-year old sociopath who murders all his foster families. The movie is basically a show about how Mikey kills off the fosters and every other person who suspects him of being a murderer. It is still banned in the UK.

A Serbian Film

Contains scenes of incest, child rape and murder, among many other more disturbing things. The “story” tells of an aging porn star’s last attempt at a film to get himself out of the industry. Unfortunately, he didn’t know that he signed up for a pedophilia-themed snuff film.

Cannibal Holocaust

An Italian horror film that showed graphic murder and pure grotesque and disturbing scenes. The movie has a storyline, but really, the scenes are just too overwhelming to make the audience take notice of it at all. This is still banned in over 50 countries to this day.

Grotesque

A young couple is kidnapped and then tortured horrifically by their obviously insane kidnapper. This 2009 Japanese splatter horror film is banned in many countries including the UK because of the very disturbing torture scenes included in the film. Scenes of eye gouging and amputation were shown, and it didn’t help that the film had no character development to talk of.

Daniel Radcliffe’s New Creeptastic Movie: The Woman In Black

Enough of wizards, wands, and muggles. Daniel Radcliffe has moved on to Broadway with “How To Succeed In Business” and to a new movie with a harp-playing toy monkey. You read that right. Check out the teaser trailer:

Radcliffe sheds the wizard robes in exchange for a set of old-timey apparel. He plays a young (slightly scruffy) lawyer who goes to take care of the estate of a newly deceased client. It’s a horror flick complete with a creepy mansion, creepy toys, creepy little girl voiceovers, creepy family portraits, and eerie “under the wallpaper” messages. We’ll pretty sure there is more creepy stuff in The Woman In Black so let’s see how it goes and wait for more updates.

Fright Night: Let’s go kill something

If you haven’t heard already, the 1985 vampire movie Fright Night is scheduled for a remake by DreamWorks, starring Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, and Colin Farrell as the next door vampire. DreamWorks has released three clips from the movie, showcasing scenes from the movie centering on the mother (Toni Collette) and the vampire hunter (David Tennant). The film centers on Charlie Brewster, who finds out that his next door neighbor is a, well, a vampire. It’s a classic, though it’s interesting to see what stuff director Craig Gillespie had revamped from the original.

Bust out the crosses, holy water, crossbows and stakes, Fright Night opens on August 19! In the meantime, check out the clips.
