One can never be too prepared for an accident, especially if the accident is something so freakish and totally unforeseen. Here are five bizarre accidents that a lot of people – both at the time they happened and even now – still quite find unbelievable.
The Death of Lady Coventry

Maria Gunning or Lady Coventry was a known beauty during her time. She was also well-known for applying red rouge and pasty white make-up everyday. This vanity of hers, however, became the cause of her death at age 27. It was found that the cause of her death was lead from her overuse of lead-based makeup.
Bouncy Castle Disaster
An inflatable bouncy castle took off into the air when it broke free from its moorings and a strong gust of wind blew. Unfortunately, there were 30 people inside the castle, two of which died while 13 others were injured. According to witnesses of this July 2006 accident, the bouncy castle was blown some 50 feet into the air and traveled some 150 feet all the while turning over before landing on the ground.

Lake Peigneur Accident
A freak accident of epic proportions occurred in Lake Peigneur in Louisiana in 1980 when a an oil rig drilling down from the surface of the lake reached a salt mine under the lake. The oil rig supposedly punctured the third level of the mine underneath which created an opening in the bottom of the lake. As a result, the lake’s water drained into the hole which expanded as salt, soil and other huge debris washed into the mine with the rushing lake water.

The whirlpool drained most of the lake’s water, the surrounding terrain, several large barges and drilling platform. Because of this incident, even the flow of the lake itself was reversed.
London Beer Flood
On October 1814, a large wave consisting of 550,000 gallons of beer came crashing down through the streets of London. It was caused by a couple of vats of beer at the London’s Meux and Company Brewery cracking open. The result: two homes were destroyed, basement rooms of homes housing families were flooded, and some 9 people drowned in the beer flood – 8 from drowning and 1 from alcohol poisoning.
Boston Molasses Disaster
When you think of molasses, you either think “good stuff” or “sweet stuff” and never really relate it to a tragic event. However, on January 1919, the people of Boston’s North End was rocked by a freak accident involving molasses. A tank of this stuff exploded, knocking down several houses due to the huge shockwave created by the explosion. Shards of metal from the said tank even reached as far as 200 feet. However, a more tragic event occurred after the explosion. The tank was filled with molasses, so after the explosion, some 2.3 million gallons of molasses escaped, formed a 25 to 30-foot wave that came rushing through the Boston streets, and took the lives of people caught in the wave. The accident caused 21 deaths and 150 injuries.
Strangely enough, residents of the area still say that on a hot day in the North End, the air smells sweet.
