Realistic prosthetic limbs now have hair, freckles and tattoos

Touch Bionics, a Scottish prosthetic technology company, has just unveiled its ultra-realistic range of prosthetic limbs with very interesting features. The limbs – whole fingers, hands and arms – will have hairs, freckles and even tattoos. The best part about the new prostheses is that they will also have the same skin tone as the person who uses them.

Using Touch Bionics’ latest technology called Living Image which is a new photographic system, the company can create limbs to match a person’s skin tone. This technology works by scanning the remaining limb of the person to correctly copy the skin tone as well as its shape and features. The scanned information is then sent to its Scotland production facility.

According to the company, clients who have received prostheses that use this technology are very satisfied. Although it has yet to be patented, the Living Image technology system might be sold or rented out to other prosthetic centers.

4 Oddest Restaurants

When we said odd, we weren’t solely pertaining to the restaurants’ menus – we were referring to the the location, staff and various other quirks about these them. Some food joints boast of chocolate-covered worms or of goats’ and cows’ unmentionables as part of their special menus, while these 4 oddest restaurants boast of, well, a lot of things most ordinary people wouldn’t normally be proud of.

Dinner in the Sky – This is certainly not for the altophobic (people who suffer from fear of heights). As the name suggests, you’ll be having your meal waaaaaay up in the air. The tables, chairs, waitstaff are hoisted up some 150 feet or so into the air by a crane.

Modern Toilet Restaurant – Based in Taiwan, this unusual restaurant has a full-on toilet theme. Instead of traditional wooden chairs, it uses toilet seats, and its tables are usually made from sinks or tubs covered with clear glass. The dinnerware is also very unique – miniature versions of toilet bowls, urinals, drinking fountains and tubs are used to hold food.

Ithaa Underwater Restaurant – This underwater restaurant is located in the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, and sits five meters below sea level. The restaurant has a transparent acrylic roof which gives diners a 180 degree view of the Indian Ocean, allowing them to observe different fishes and sting rays while they eat. The place is quite small as it can only seat up to 14 persons at a time.

Izakaya Kayabuki – The Kayabuki Tavern in Japan is a sake-house. It’s nothing fancy, but what makes it unusual is its staff. The owner’s two pet macaque monkeys work at the restaurant – one brings hot towels to customers to clean up before each meal, while the other serves the patrons’ orders.

5 Bizarre Accidents

One can never be too prepared for an accident, especially if the accident is something so freakish and totally unforeseen. Here are five bizarre accidents that a lot of people – both at the time they happened and even now – still quite find unbelievable.

The Death of Lady Coventry

Maria Gunning or Lady Coventry was a known beauty during her time. She was also well-known for applying red rouge and pasty white make-up everyday. This vanity of hers, however, became the cause of her death at age 27. It was found that the cause of her death was lead from her overuse of lead-based makeup.

Bouncy Castle Disaster

An inflatable bouncy castle took off into the air when it broke free from its moorings and a strong gust of wind blew. Unfortunately, there were 30 people inside the castle, two of which died while 13 others were injured. According to witnesses of this July 2006 accident, the bouncy castle was blown some 50 feet into the air and traveled some 150 feet all the while turning over before landing on the ground.

Lake Peigneur Accident

A freak accident of epic proportions occurred in Lake Peigneur in Louisiana in 1980 when a an oil rig drilling down from the surface of the lake reached a salt mine under the lake. The oil rig supposedly punctured the third level of the mine underneath which created an opening in the bottom of the lake. As a result, the lake’s water drained into the hole which expanded as salt, soil and other huge debris washed into the mine with the rushing lake water.

The whirlpool drained most of the lake’s water, the surrounding terrain, several large barges and drilling platform. Because of this incident, even the flow of the lake itself was reversed.

London Beer Flood

On October 1814, a large wave consisting of 550,000 gallons of beer came crashing down through the streets of London. It was caused by a couple of vats of beer at the London’s Meux and Company Brewery cracking open. The result: two homes were destroyed, basement rooms of homes housing families were flooded, and some 9 people drowned in the beer flood – 8 from drowning and 1 from alcohol poisoning.

Boston Molasses Disaster

When you think of molasses, you either think “good stuff” or “sweet stuff” and never really relate it to a tragic event. However, on January 1919, the people of Boston’s North End was rocked by a freak accident involving molasses. A tank of this stuff exploded, knocking down several houses due to the huge shockwave created by the explosion. Shards of metal from the said tank even reached as far as 200 feet. However, a more tragic event occurred after the explosion. The tank was filled with molasses, so after the explosion, some 2.3 million gallons of molasses escaped, formed a 25 to 30-foot wave that came rushing through the Boston streets, and took the lives of people caught in the wave. The accident caused 21 deaths and 150 injuries.

Strangely enough, residents of the area still say that on a hot day in the North End, the air smells sweet.

Top 10 Depressing Jobs

Top 10 Depressing JobsWhen looking for a career, people usually choose depending on their hobbies, strengths, and general ambitions. What most people don’t consider is that the career choice they make may suddenly open new possibilities – specifically the possibility of spending a few months of every year with a debilitating depression. Health.com lists the 10 careers (out of the 21 major career fields) with the highest rates of depression.

The high-stress jobs list includes personal care professionals, namely those who work with old people at nursing homes and those who work with children. The stress stems basically from caring for people who are too young or too ill to express gratitude. The next up on the list are food service staff. The low pay, rude and irate customers, harried pace, and exhausting work can make this career a pretty stressful one. Another job that you may have guessed is up on this list is social work. Social workers deal with abused children or families and this can make the job very stressful.

Other jobs on the list include health care professionals (nurses, and doctors, among others), salespeople, maintenance workers, and teachers. Artists, entertainers, and writers are also on the list, so hmm… maybe this calls for a career change.

Museum of Broken Relationships: A Different Kind of Catharsis

Museum of Broken Relationships: A Different Kind of Catharsis - Ex Axe

Got a personal axe to grind with your ex? Well, somewhere in a museum in Zangreb, Croatia sits an axe that an anonymous donor once used to axe an exes’ furniture into sticks and heaps of wood. Yap, I’m not kidding. The Museum of Broken Relationships exists.

Founded by exes Olinka Vistica and Drazen Grubisic, the museum houses several dozen pieces of odds and ends sent from all over. An old Nokia cellphone is a member of their exhibit, and its tag reads, “It lasted 300 days too long. He gave me his mobile phone so I wouldn’t call him anymore.” The exhibits are oddly affecting and varied in their own ways. There’s a lock of hair and a vial of tears, as well as a prosthesis.

Museum of Broken Relationships: A Different Kind of Catharsis - Prosthesis

According to the founders, donors find the act of donating a piece of a past relationship can be therapeutic and liberating. Well, if you don’t want to give them away, you can always think up creative ways with which to use things like, say, your ex’s wedding dress.

The Japanese are crazy: More unusual behavior and products

Yes, they are, to the point that “crazy” has almost become synonymous with Japan. The Japanese are equally obsessed with subcultures like other countries, and have a penchant for creating the most bizarre items. Let’s not stereotype the Japanese though, because like any other culture, only a fraction of their total population is engaged in strange behaviors and products. Media just exaggerates these unique behaviors and we happen to catch them on the news and just think, “WTF, Japan?” (There is an actual website named WTF Japan Seriously that highlights many WTF moments where the Japanese are usually involved.) The following is a collection of uniquely Japanese behavior and products.

Harajuku Fashion. This refers to the unique fashion style of the teenagers who are in Japan’s Harajuku area. To create the Harajuku look, these teens infuse a variety of fashion styles and other influences. This style is very apparent in the extremely vibrant colors of their hair and make-up, and in the style of their outfits. Harajuku fashion has become more than just a fashion statement; it has also become a means for teenagers to express their individuality.

Crazy Products. Japan has a lot of bizarre yet partly useful products you wouldn’t normally want to get caught using. There’s the hardhat with suction that lets you sleep comfortably upright on the metro, the girlfriend’s lap pillow for when guys feel they want to sleep on a woman’s lap, and the peeing dog which mimics the behavior of a dog when peeing.

Oh, and let’s not forget the vending machine that dispenses – wait for it – used schoolgirl panties.

Classic sexist ads that will make even your mom nod in disapproval

The gender revolution which started in the 19th century in the United States and the United Kingdom is still ongoing. The first wave of feminism aimed to completely remove the ownership of women and children by their husbands (or chattel marriage) and promote equal property rights for women. But because this was way, way, way back, it was kind of impossible to achieve such relatively monumental goals. The advocates who aimed for the right of women’s suffrage only succeeded in the early 20th century. Women over 30 and owned properties then were granted the right to vote.

The second wave of feminism which still exists until this day started in the 1960s and focused on equality. The third wave which coexists with the second wave is a response to the preceding waves’ backlash and essentialist definitions of femininity. Clearly, the “backlash” the third wave must be talking about are perfectly depicted in the following classic sexist advertisements from the early to mid-20th century which evidently define how men regarded women in society back in the day. Or maybe up until now.

Yep, even women.

I bet.

Lesbians Luv Bieber

Justine Bieber is either the next Michael Jackson or the anti-Christ.  Right now it’s too early to tell.  But when even lesbians want to look like the latest boy wonder from the same music puppeteers who brought us Shaun Cassidy, Tiffany, and the Jo Bros, you know something’s up.

Anyway, the website Lesbians Who Look Like Justin Bieber, encourages people to submit “an adorable lesbian or picture of Justin Bieber looking particularly lesbi.”

Hmmm, photos of the Bieber looking like a lesbian. Wait, wouldn’t that be every photo of Justin?
