The advertising industry can be more than just a little cutthroat, and we all know that nearly nothing is holy when ads (TV commercials and whatnot) get into cat fights. The folks at Oddee assembled an epic collection of pictures proving that nothing is sacred even in billboards. For one thing, it seems that McDonald’s billboards are a bit of an easy target, along with ads for adult toys and strip clubs.
This one is either a very poorly placed McDonald’s ad or a clever ProLife retort.
In Thessaloniki, Greece, officials were baffled when a near biblical deluge (think Moses, Egypt, and a mountain of amphibians) of frogs spilled into a major thoroughfare. The Egnatia highway in northern Greece was closed for two hours following three accidents where motorists skidded off the highway while trying to dodge the frogs.
According to the traffic police chief Giorgos Thanoglou, tiny frogs covered the road by the “millions.” He further commented, “There was a carpet of frogs.”
Well, the authorities said that the frog problem was probably brought about when the tiny critters from the nearby lake went in search of food, so there’s probably little chance of rivers flowing red from blood, hail, and gnats and flies.
Yes, ladies, today the brassiere its 100th birthday. To celebrate this intrepid piece of underwear’s one hundred years of service, the folks at The Today Show featured a video montage of vintage ads, fun facts, women’s liberation, and iconic modern bras, among other things.
Considering that the modern bra ousted the corset in terms of accepted support garments, women have a lot to be thankful for. Historically, the bra replaced the corset (a very uncomfortable piece of clothing, even in pictures) in women’s wardrobes. The bra also played a role in the women’s liberation movements in the US, especially during one protest in September 7, 1968 when bras (along with other stuff like high-heeled shoes, girdles, curlers, and corsets, among other things) were dumped into a “Freedom Trash Can.” Reportedly, there were no bras burned during the said protests.
On a different note, the modern bra has turned from Mary Phelps Jabob’s simple assembly of 2 handkerchiefs held together with some cord and pink ribbon to today’s variety of different styles and forms. At any rate, this useful piece of wardrobe has come a long way in one hundred years. To the bra, ladies! Cheers!
