Classic sexist ads that will make even your mom nod in disapproval
The gender revolution which started in the 19th century in the United States and the United Kingdom is still ongoing. The first wave of feminism aimed to completely remove the ownership of women and children by their husbands (or chattel marriage) and promote equal property rights for women. But because this was way, way, way back, it was kind of impossible to achieve such relatively monumental goals. The advocates who aimed for the right of women’s suffrage only succeeded in the early 20th century. Women over 30 and owned properties then were granted the right to vote.
The second wave of feminism which still exists until this day started in the 1960s and focused on equality. The third wave which coexists with the second wave is a response to the preceding waves’ backlash and essentialist definitions of femininity. Clearly, the “backlash” the third wave must be talking about are perfectly depicted in the following classic sexist advertisements from the early to mid-20th century which evidently define how men regarded women in society back in the day. Or maybe up until now.
Yep, even women.
I bet.
