Cruel Wives Club

Yep, there should be one. Seen on oddee is a list of wives who not only deserve to be called “cruel” but also deserve to end up in jail (Well, most of them did anyway) because of the unfathomable things they did to their husbands, sons and daughters, and even what they had planned to do to their grandchildren. The Cruel Wives Club consists of seemingly normal wives who turn out to be devious women and cunning murderers.

Take Stacey Castor for example. She was found to have given ethylene glycol or antifreeze with a kitchen baster to her second husband over a period of four days, causing him to die. She made it look like her husband committed suicide, but when investigators found traces of antifreeze in his system, they knew it was murder. They exhumed the body of Castor’s first husband who had died in 2000 of a heart attack and found that he too had traces of ethyl glycol in his system. As if things weren’t bad enough, Stacey Castor even tried framing her own daughter for the murders. The daughter was hospitalized for overdosing on vodka and prescription pills, and she had apparently left behind a suicide note where she confessed murdering her stepfather. Fortunately, the daughter survived and testified against her mother during trial.

Another notorious member of the Cruel Wives Club is a 76-year old woman named Betty Neumar who is suspected to have murdered four of her five husbands over a period of several decades. The motive? Insurance money. Loads and loads of insurance money. Apparently, she took out life insurance policies for her husbands and children. She collected $20,000 when one of her husbands died in 1986. A year before, she collected $10,000 in life insurance when her son passed away. All these only came to light when Neumar’s grandson found out that his grandmother was planning to buy him a $100,000 life insurance policy. He got spooked, dug for some information, and found out that bad things tend to happen to people around Neumar. The grandson is now asking authorities to look into the “suicide” of his stepfather back in 1985.

Perhaps the most notorious member of the Cruel Wives Club is Katherine Knight, an Australian who is the first woman in the country to be sentenced to a natural life term without the chance of parole. She has had a history of violence in her relationship. She cut the throat of an 8-week-old puppy’s throat before the eyes of one of her husbands, mashed one ex-husband’s dentures, and constantly had arguments with another husband, John Charles Price. Price even filed for an Apprehended Violence Order against Knight, but that didn’t do anything to spare him from Knight’s temper. She stabbed Price with a butcher’s knife 37 times, skinned him and hung his hide in the lounge room from a meat hook. She then decapitated the poor skinned fellow, put his head in a pot on the stove, and baked flesh from his buttocks. She then prepared gravy and cooked veggies as side dishes. Knight had intended to serve this gruesome meal to their children but police found the meal first before the kids got home.

I guess we should refrain from pissing off the wives then.

Google Android OS outpacing Apple iPhone

Yep, you read that right. The NPD Group has reported that Google’s smartphone operating system, Android, has overtaken Apple’s iPhone place at number two. According to the market research company, Android’s market share has grown to 28 percent, against Apple’s 21 percent. Research in Motion’s (RIM) Blackberry still maintains a big chunk of the phone OS market at 36 percent.

Goole Android phone

According to tech site GigaOM, the lead can easily be explained by exclusivity. AT&T’s exclusive hold on the iPhone limits Apple’s reach. GigaOM says further that Google Android answers a chunk of the market that wants an iPhone but uses a different network, like Verizon. The Android features a similar interface to the iPhone OS and has a growing app store with 50,000 applications available. Aside from that, users can choose from a variety of handsets that runs on the Android platform, compared to choosing between an iPhone 3G and an iPhone 3GS.

As consumers, it’s always good whenever hardware and software makers have their wars between them. We can always expect good innovations and better deals for our buck. That said, we’ll have to see what Verizon Wireless and Google has in store for us in their new tablet project. Will it come to par with Apple’s iPad? Can’t wait.

Seen on Twitter: PCOS machine speaks up

I’ve mentioned it before: Twitter consists of the most diverse and amusing collection of people on the Internet. Angsty teens, housewives, bored housebands, ordinary (insignificant?) people, celebrities and politicians (same banana?) set up their own Twitter accounts to mingle with the rest of us netizens and tweet about stuff that will probably make anyone say, “TMI.” But hey, this is the Internet; we can do and say almost anything. And just anyone can speak up. Heck, even @rustyrockets and @chavezcandanga (also well known in RL as Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez) are on Twitter.

Now, to drive home the point that Twitter has the most absurd collection of, erm, personalities, you should look at this particular Twitter account: @pcosmachine. Yep, all Filipinos should recognize the name well – it’s the Precinct Count Optical Scan machine or PCOS machine. The machine has been in the center of most election-related news in the country in the past couple of months because of its supposed lapses in terms of programming and security. And as a lot of people know, Filipinos have a penchant for laughing in the face of adversity. In this case, adversity = surreal elections and temperamental PCOS machines. Some guy (who might be @Doblezeta) created the @pcosmachine account and showed us all what the machines would say if it were… sentient. Creepy idea, but awesomesauce nonetheless. Here are a couple of its tweets:

RT @john_paul_90: “@pcosmachine Any suggestions to make the voting process better next time?” – YES. VOTE WISELY.

Cannot wait for liquor ban to end. I need a drink.

Drinks on me tonight. Well actually it was added to my acquisition cost, so drinks on you Filipino People! Kampay!

Cookbook calls for “salt and freshly ground black people”

Pasta Bible - calls for freshly ground black peopleMost recipes do call for a pinch of salt there and a dash of black people here – wait what? A typographical error had one Australian publisher pulp 7,000 copies of its book, “Pasta Bible”.

The said typo was found in the list of ingredients for spelt tagliatelle with sardines and prosciutto. This tiny misprint has proved to be quite expensive for publisher Penguin Group Australia since it forced them to destroy and reprint the offending copies of the cookbook. According to head of publishing Bob Session, “We’re mortified that this has become an issue of any kind, and why anyone would be offended, we don’t know. When it comes to the proofreader, of course they should have picked it up, but proofreading a cookbook is an extremely difficult task. I find that quite forgivable.”

All was blamed on the computer’s spellchecker, as the rest of the recipes with salt and black pepper are safe from the disastrous misprint.
